Men's Basketball Wins Saturday in California

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The Illinois Tech men's basketball team traveled to California for the first of two games in the Golden State on Saturday. Tech downed host UC-Santa Cruz 68-62.

How it Happened

  • The Scarlet Hawks held a slim lead for most of the first half, but the Banana Slugs were able to take the lead on a Tyler Klingenback three-pointer at the 7:21 mark to go up 21-19.
  • Tech tied the score a few times down the stretch of the first half. However, Santa Cruz were able to stretch the lead closer to the intermission and led 34-28 heading into halftime.
  • The Scarlet Hawks worked their way back, taking a 43-41 lead on a Samuel Rarick jumpshot with 12:46 left to go.
  • It was a back-and-forth contest down the stretch. With the score tied at 60-60, Jake Digiorgio make a lay-up and a free throw at the 1:39 mark to take the lead for good. The Scarlet Hawks hit free throws the rest of the way to hold the advantage.

  • Digiorgo recorded yet another double-double, tallying 18 points and 14 rebounds off the bench.
  • Rarick also tallied 18 points for Tech.
  • Malik Howze scored 14 points to go along with six rebounds and four assists.

  • Tech shot a better percentage from the floor, outdoing the Slugs 45.1% to 35.5%.
  • Tech outrebounded Santa Cruz 40-31.
  • The Slugs outdid Tech 11-1 on three-point shots, but the Scarlet Hawks hit 21 free throws compared to Santa Cruz's seven.
