Illinois Tech wins the Engineering Battle vs Rose Hulman Institute of Technology

On a warm spring day Thursday, April 10, 2014 in Terre Haute, IN Illinois Tech won 9-7 against like minded Engineering school Rose Hulman Institute of Technology.Andrew Gustafson (JR/Niles, IL) started on the mound for the Hawks and received the no decision after going 4.0 innings giving up 6 hits, 5 runs (all earned), with 5 walks to 2 strike outs. The call went to the bullpen for Corry Winiecki who finished the remainder of the 9 inning contest. Winiecki went 5.0 innings and allowed 5hits, with 5 strikeouts to 2 walks 2 runs (all earned) allowing just 2 runs to get his 1st collegiate win as a pitcher.

"We talked about this game a lot over the last few days. Recruits and fans will look to this game specifically on our schedule. I told the team that great players have to be able to play under pressure and succeed. So I told the team the pressure is on Thursday, if we want to take Illinois Tech Baseball to the next level then this game can help us. So lets go show what we are all about." The bats came out on fire right from the get go. As the Hawks led off the top of the first inning with a single from Austin Boos (SO/Indianapolis, IN). Followed by a sacrifice bunt from Ryan Fitzpatrick (JR/Chicago, IL) to move Boos into scoring position. Next Michael Malfeo (JR/Orland Park, IL) drove in Boos with a triple.Brian Colon-Rodriguez (SO/Carolina, PR) was next up and hit a short single to right field. Then freshmen first basemen Adam Samad (FR/Alsip, IL) launched the pitch over the left field wall for the 3-run home run to give Tech a 4-0 lead in the first inning.

The Hawks added three more runs in the 3rd inning on singles by Fitzpatrick, Colon-Rodriguez, Darwin Argumedo (JR/Cartagena, Colombia) and reaching on an error Samad. Bill Cronin (JR/Orland Park, IL) with one of the RBI on a sac fly and Argumedo another on his single.

Rose Hulman Fighting Engineers made a run at the lead in the 4th with 5 runs and again in the 5th inning scoring 2 more to tie up the game.

Then right away in the next half inning the top of the 6th the Hawks refused to stop for Winiecki. With two outs in the inning three straight singles from Boos, Fitzpatrick and the game winning RBI hit from Michael Malfeo put the visiting IIT back on top.

Finally in the 7th inning the Hawks added one final run. Samad singled then Cronin bunted him to second and with two outs Alex Babusci (JR/Park Ridge, IL) singled to drive in Samad.

On the day your Illinois Tech Hawks finished with 9 runs on 13 hits and 0 errors.
