Crushing extra inning loss to Purdue University-Calumet
Illinois Institute of Technology lost the ballgame after losing the lead in the eighth inning Sunday, as Purdue University-Calumet grabbed a 5-4 victory in eight innings.
Austin Boos (SO/Indianapolis, IN) reached base three times in the game for Illinois Institute of Technology. He singled in the fifth inning.
Cody Roberts got the win in relief for Purdue University-Calumet. Roberts pitched three innings and allowed no runs.
Cory Winiecki (FR/Des Plaines, IL) took the loss for Illinois Institute of Technology. He lasted just one inning, walked two, struck out one, and allowed one run. AfterElliot Chibe (FR/Palos Park, IL) went 6 1/3 innings allowing four runs (two earned) on two walks and three strikeouts and a wild pitch that allowed a run to score and tie the game in the seventh.
The top of the first saw Illinois Institute of Technology take an early lead, 1-0. Brian Colon-Rodriguez (SO/Carolina, PR) got things going with a single. The Tech put up one more in the third as PUC tied it with two runs of their own in the third.
In the fifth, the Hawks took the 4-2 lead starting with Austin Boos's leadoff single followed up by stealing second base. Next a SAC bunt from Colon-Rodriguez to move Boos to third. Adam Samad (FR/Alsip, IL) singled to left for an RBI, scoring Boos. Alex Babusci (JR/Park Ridge, IL) later singled in the inning andDarwin Argumedo (JR/Cartagena, Colombia) ripped an RBI single also.
But with the lead Tech could not hold on, allowing two runs in the seventh to force the game into extra innings just two outs away from a victory. In the eighth IIT played small ball to draw a leadoff walk from Matthew Bishop (SO/New Lenox, IL), SAC bunt from James Tarala (FR/Crown Point, IN) to move the go ahead run into scoring position. Next, Ryan Fitzpatrick (JR/Chicago, IL) grounds out to the shortstop moving Bishop to third. Then the threat ends with a Boos pop out.
Purdue Cal did not let the opportunity slip away, scoring in the eighth to capture only their fourth win of the season.
In game 2, James Tarala went 2-3 at the plate, but Illinois Institute of Technology fell 6-0 to Purdue University-Calumet.
Anthony Spangler got it done on the bump on the way to a win for PUC. He tossed seven innings of shutout ball. Struck out six, walked none and gave up five hits.
Alex Babusci couldn't get it done on the rubber for Illinois Institute of Technology, taking a loss. He went three innings, walked three, struck out one, and allowed three runs. Followed by Ryan Fitzpatrick three innings, three runs on four hits with one walk.
Austin Boos, Brian Colon-Rodriguez, Adam Samad, James Tarala, andConner Wiebell (SO/Cincinnati, OH) all singled in the game and that was all the Hawks offense could get done.
