Chicago, IL - Illinois Institute of Technology lost a crazy contested 10-5 in extra innings on Wednesday, April 30th 2014 at Ed Glancy Field after being tied 5-5 through the 7th inning.
Brian Colon-Rodriguez (SO/Carolina, PR) racked up two RBIs on two hits for IIT. He homered in the first inning and singled in the seventh inning.
Jeff Victor got the win in relief for Calvin College throwing two innings and allowing no runs. Calvin College's Grant Van Putten, Matt Schepel, Colt Wolfe and Jordan Vanderwall combined for nine hits and seven RBIs.
Cory Winiecki was the game's losing pitcher. He lasted just 1.2 innings, walked one, struck out one, allowed three hits and two runs (both earned). Winiecki was pulled after a lead off single in the 8th inning and the runner came around to score the 6th and winning run to result in the losing decision. James Tarala (FR/Crown Point, IN) came in after the single in the 8th and finished the inning walking one, struck out two, and allowed four runs.
In game 2, Illinois Institute of Technology lost despite Michael Malfeo (JR/Orland Park, IL)'s solid day from both the mound and the plate.
It was a good day at the plate for Malfeo where he went 2-3. He singled in the first and sixth innings. Then came into pitch to get the last out in the top of the 7th holding Calvin hitless over one-third of an inning, allowing no base runners.
Grant Van Putten, Matt Schepel and Austin Voigt helped lead Calvin College. They combined for seven hits and eight RBIs. Calvin College never trailed after scoring three runs in the third on two singles.
