Illinois Tech Offense Too Much for Lakeland College in Double Header Rout

In game one Andrew Gustafson (JR/Niles, IL) was the difference as he threw a complete game 1-hitter. "Gus had his best stuff today but did give up one run because of free base runners." Illinois Institute of Technology refused to relinquish the lead after grabbing it early against Lakeland College, recording a 10-1 victory on Thursday at home.

Ten runs in the first three innings allowed Illinois Institute of Technology to put the game away early.

An RBI single by Michael Malfeo (JR/Orland Park, IL), an RBI single by Brian Colon-Rodriguez (SO/Carolina, PR), an RBI single by Adam Samad (FR/Alsip, IL), an RBI double by James Tarala (FR/Crown Point, IN), and a sacrifice fly by Alex Babusci(JR/Park Ridge, IL) in the first inning and an RBI double by Colon-Rodriguez, an RBI single by Bill Cronin (JR/Orland Park, IL), and a two-run single by Babusci during the second inning supplied the early offense for Illinois Tech. Samad went a perfect 4-4 at the plate for IIT.

Gustafson who did allow one earned run on one hit, walked three and struck out five during his seven innings of work.

Matt Weller was charged with the loss. He allowed 10 runs in six innings, walked three and struck out two.

Lakeland College got onto the scoreboard with one run in the second. Illinois Institute of Technology responded with four runs in the second then one final run in the third.


In game 2, Illinois Institute of Technology blew out Lakeland College 12-1 after pouring on seven runs in the second inning.

Michael Malfeo racked up three RBIs on three hits for Illinois Institute of Technology. He singled in the second inning and doubled in the third and fifth innings.

James Tarala's six strikeouts were enough to push Tech past Lakeland College. James allowed no earned runs on three hits and two walks over seven innings.

Christian Foss took the loss for Lakeland College. He allowed eight runs in two innings, walked four and struck out one.

Illinois Institute of Technology added four more runs in the bottom of the third. Michael's double got things going, plating Alex BabusciSam Pung (SO/Ludington, MI) and Ryan Fitzpatrick (JR/Chicago, IL). That was followed up by Brian Colon-Rodriguez's double, plating Malfeo. Tech added another run in the fifth.
