[Intramurals & Recreation] Spend more time at Keating

In direct response to feedback from the Students Speak Survey, Keating Sports Center is extending its Saturday hours until 8 pm, starting January 30, 2010. This will give students, as well as faculty, staff, alumni, and guests more time to play their favorite sports and exercise their way to better health. The new hours affect the general facility and the fitness center; swimming pool hours remain unchanged.

[Men's Swimming and Diving] Lake Forest Meet

Saturday, the entire team went to Lake Forest, Illinois, to swim against the Forrester's of Lake Forest College. The pool is in meters instead of yards, so it was a little bit longer, and times were not usual for the swimmers. In addition, the seniors got to make the lineup, so some of the events were also unusual. But the Scarlet Hawks had some good swims nonetheless.

Friday afternoon, the Men's swimming and diving team made the drive up to Green Bay Wisconsin to compete against the Green Bay Phoenix. The competition was tough, as Green Bay is an NCAA D1 school, and the Phoenix won the meet, but the Scarlet Hawks had some good swims. The 400 yard medley relay, consisting of freshman Matthew Rosenfeld, seniors Jay Park and Joe Taylor, and freshman Eric Grunden took 2^nd with a time of 3:41.69. In the 1000 yard freestyle, sophomore Ryan Tapak took 3^rd with a time of 11:25.16. Rosenfeld also took 4^th in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 56.61. In the 50 yard freestyle, Taylor took 2^nd with a time of 22.47, and senior Brian Brady took 4^th with a time of 22.92. Freshman Ian McNair took 4^th in the 1 meter diving with a score of 221.15. Sophomore Keiji Halloway took 4^th in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 51.40, and Park took 3^rd in the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:17.02, followed by freshman Michael Keane who took 6^th with a time of 2:20.60. Taylor took 1^st in the 100 yard butterfly, with a time of 51.48, just out touching Green Bay's Ryan Loy, and Halloway took 3^rd with a 53.85. McNair took 4^th on the 3 meter board as well, with a score of 248.85, followed by sophomore Tom Lord with a score of 138.90. The 400 yard freestyle relay of Taylor, Brady, freshman John Lyman and junior Tomasz Chojnacki took 3^rd with a time of 3:23.12.

Freshman Max Ramminger is ranked #1 in the nation in the 50 Free and 100 Free on the most recent NAIA top times list released earlier today. His 100 Free time is already a school record and his 50 Free time is just off of the current school record. Max is also ranked in the top 20 in the 100 Breast (6th), 100 Back (15th) and 200 IM (15th). Senior Joe Taylor (3rd in the 100 Fly, 12th in the 200 Fly), and freshman Victoria Masney (4th in 100 Free, 6th in 100 Fly, 14th in 50 Free) are the only other swimmers currently ranked in multiple events. Joining them are freshman Matthew Rosenfeld (19th in 200 Back), freshman Eric Grunden (20th in 200 Breaststroke), sophomore Keiji Halloway (18th in 200 Fly), sophomore Melanie Koto (16th in 1000 Free), sophomore Morgan Curran (18th in 200 Breaststroke), junior Joe Muchna (19th in 200 Fly) and senior Jay Park (18th in 200 Breaststroke).

Not to be outdone, Freshman Ian McNair leads the way for all divers with the #1 score in the 1M diving and 3 M diving events for 11 dives, while ranking 5th and 7th respectively for 6 dives. Also on the diving list are sophomore Tom Lord, junior Aaron Komoroski, junior Jeff Reilly and senior Jennifer Iversen. Both teams are ranked in the top 15 in all relay events.

[Men's Swimming and Diving] Swimming Battles at Lindenwood Meet

Saturday, the Illinois Tech swimming and diving team traveled to St. Charles Missouri to swim in a four way meet against Lindenwood University, Missouri State University and St. Louis University. The meet was held at the Rec-Plex, the pool that the National Swim Meet will be held at in March. Both the men's and women's team placed 4th overall. Diving was held first, and the men's team had three divers compete on the 1 and 3 meter boards. On the 1 meter board, Freshman Ian McNair placed 6th with a score of 208.90, sophomore Tom Lord took 9th with a score of 185.00, and junior Jeff Reilly took 11th with a score of 162.50. On the 3 meter board, McNair took 7th with a score of 225.30, and Lord took 10th with a score of 129.95.

Republished from Tech News - On Saturday the Scarlet Hawks swimming and diving team hosted their first meet against another NAIA team, Lindenwood University. Also present for competition on the women's side was Robert Morris College. Although both teams lost to Lindenwood, the Lady Hawks kept up with the Lions (or would it be Lionesses), finishing the meet only ten points behind them. Last year at Nationals, Lindenwood beat the women's team, placing eight to our tenth, so the close races in this meet are a good indicator of the strength of the women's team this year compared to last.

Republished from Tech News - The Scarlet Hawks' swimming team traveled to Romeoville on Saturday to take on the Flyers of Lewis University. The team was pumped and ready to swim fast, and swim fast they did. The first impressive swim of the morning came from senior Joe Taylor, in the 50 Butterfly leg of the Men's 200 Medley Relay. The relay started off with freshmen Matthew Rosenfeld and Michael Keane, followed by Taylor, who swam the butterfly in a 22.07, pulling ahead of Lewis' Matthew Schmidt. Although Allan Sliva of Lewis out swam freshman Eric Grunden in the Freestyle leg, the relay's overall time was a 1:41.37, a National qualifying time by almost ten seconds. Taylor also qualified for Nationals in the 200 Butterfly, taking a 2nd place finish with a time of 1:59.13, only nine seconds off of the current team record.
