On a stormy Sunday, April 13th in Rockford, IL the game was moved up an hour to try and beat the rain. Illinois Tech won 3-2 against Rockford College. Andrew Gustafson (JR/Niles, IL) started on the mound for the Hawks and received the win to take him to (3-2) on the season. Gustafson went 7.2 very strong innings giving up 8 singles, 2 runs (all earned), with 3 walks to 5 strike outs. "Gus gave us everything he had today pitching on shorter rest and he showed the team that he wants to be the guy on the pitching staff that you give the ball to when you need results." Stated head coach Scott Marks. With bases loaded and two out in the bottom of the 8th inning Michael Malfeo (JR/Orland Park, IL) came in for the 4 out save. Malfeo slammed the door on the threat by striking out the pinch hitter and in the 9th two fly outs and a ground out resulted in the Hawks win.
For the offence Tech scored one run in the second inning, one more in the third and the winning run in the sixth. In the second IIT's Bill Cronin (JR/Orland Park, IL) singled with two outs advanced to second on a wild pitch and then scored on a throwing error.
In the third inning the Hawks leadoff single by Alex Babusci (JR/Park Ridge, IL) and hit and run single next from Austin Boos (SO/Indianapolis, IN) moved Babusci to third base. Next batter Ryan Fitzpatrick (JR/Chicago, IL) sacrifice bunted and on the throw to first base Babusci swiped into the plate for a run.
The key offensive inning was the sixth Malfeo was the first to reach with a one out single. Then with the error on the second baseman Brian Colon-Rodriguez (SO/Carolina, PR) reached. A fly out for the second out, followed by two straight singles with Cronin loading the bases and James Tarala (FR/Crown Point, IN) knocking in what would turn out to be the winning RBI.
Rockford scored its only two runs of the game both in the third inning off 4 singles and leaving 2 runners stranded.
