In game 1 Illinois Institute of Technology lost 3-0 to Finlandia University Saturday at the home opener on campus in Chicago, IL despite starting pitcher Andrew Gustafson (JR/Niles, IL) 5.0 innings only allowing 2 hits and 9 strikeouts induced.
Chris Saari recorded the win for the Lions with the complete game 3 hitter.
Elliot Chibe (FR/Palos Park, IL) and Cory Winiecki (FR/Des Plaines, IL) both went one inning each to keep Tech in the game. Finlandia scored one in the 2nd, 5th and 7th innings and that was all the scoring for the game from both teams.
Alex Babusci (JR/Park Ridge, IL) had the lone extra base hit for the home team in the 3rd inning. While Brian Colon-Rodriguez (SO/Carolina, PR) and Adam Samad (FR/Alsip, IL) had the only other two hits of the game both singles.
In game 2 of the double header Illinois Institute of Technology had a come from behind win 2-1 against Finlandia University. Starting pitcher James Tarala (FR/Crown Point, IN) was running on all cylinders to throw a complete game five hitter allowing just one run (0 earned) with 8 strikeouts and no walks.
Luke Paul got the loss for the Lions. He allowed two runs over six innings. He struck out five, walked one and surrendered five hits.
The visiting Finlandia scored their lone run in the top of the first then Tarala slammed the door shut for the remaining 6 innings. IIT offence was quiet until the bottom of the 5th where the Hawks with one out Adam Samad singled followed a single by Darwin Argumedo (JR/Cartagena, Colombia) and then another single from Bill Cronin (JR/Orland Park, IL) to load the bases. Ryan Fitzpatrick (JR/Chicago, IL) singled to center field for the RBI and moving all runners up one more base. Then Alex Babusci grounded out to second base scoring Argumedo from 3rd.
Tech will take on Finlandia University again tomorrow Sunday, April 6th at 10:00am for two more games.
