On Wednesday, April 9, 2014 just down the street on the campus of University of Chicago, Illinois Tech came away with the win 8-5. James Tarala (FR/Crown Point, IN) started on the mound for the Hawks and received the win (3-2) after going 5.0 innings giving up 8 hits, 4 runs (all earned), with 2 walks to 1 strike out. The call went to the bullpen for Elliot Chibe (FR/Palos Park, IL) who went 3.1 innings and allowing 3 hits, with 1 strikeouts to 1 walk, on 1 earned run. The closer Michael Malfeo (JR/Orland Park, IL) came in for the last two out of the 9th inning to record his second save of the season.
The home Maroons scored one run in the 1st, 3 runs in the 5th and one more in the 9th. Andrew VanWazer led the home team with 4 hits from the designated hitter spot.
The visiting Hawks took the lead in the 4th with a 4 run inning. With two outs in the fourth a U of C throwing error put Alex Babusci (JR/Park Ridge, IL) on base and the next hitter Bill Cronin (JR/Orland Park, IL) brought him in with a triple to right field. Two singles by Darwin Argumedo (JR/Cartagena, Colombia) and James Tarala and then a double by Austin Boos (SO/Indianapolis, IN) in succession brought in three more unearned runs to give the visitors a 4-1 lead.
The Scarlet Hawks went up 5-1 in the fifth after a RBI double by Brian Colon-Rodriguez (SO/Carolina, PR). The Maroons got back within one at 5-4 with three runs in their half of the fifth. Again in the 6th IIT added two more runs on 4 hits, and 2 U of C errors.
The last bit of excitement came in the bottom of the 9th when closer Malfeo came in with 1 out and the bases loaded. Malfeo got out number two with a sac fly to left field (run charges to Chibe) and then a pop out in foul ground to end the game and get Tech to a 8-9 record on the season.
Next up is tomorrow on the long road stretch to Rose Hulman Institute of Technology in Indiana for a single 9 inning game starting at 5:00pm central time.
