Michael Malfeo (JR/Orland Park, IL) did all he could to give Illinois Institute of Technology a boost, but it wasn't enough to get past Carroll College, as Tech lost 8-6 in seven innings at Kino Sports Complex in Tucson, AZ on Monday.
Michael had two extra-base hits for Illinois Institute of Technology. He tripled in the first inning, doubled in the fifth inning, and singled in the seventh inning. Connor Wiebell was charged with his first loss on the mound in 2014. He lasted just three innings, walked six, struck out one, and allowed five runs.
Kevin Dienne got the win for Carroll College on the mound. He allowed three runs over six innings. He struck out three, walked two and surrendered seven hits.
IIT jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first when they got the spark in the form of a Austin Boos (SO/Indianapolis, IN) single, before Michael Malfeo tripled, bringing home Boos.
Carroll College took the lead in the second, scoring five runs on three singles and did not lose the lead for the duration. Illinois Institute of Technology scored two runs in the top of the fourth to cut its deficit to two. On bases loaded walks by Ryan Fitzpatrick (JR/Chicago, IL) and Alex Babusci (JR/Park Ridge, IL) setting off the rally.
Three runs in the top of the seventh got the Hawks within one hit of the tie or win. An RBI triple by Boos, an RBI single by Malfeo, and an error gave Illinois Institute of Technology life. With one out in the last half Tech had bases loaded. Head Coach makes a pinch running substitution for the potential tying run at second base Matt Bishop for Sam Pung (SO/Ludington, MI). Then Carroll's Zachary Wiseman got the last two outs, as Bill Cronin (JR/Orland Park, IL) and Ryan Fitzpatrick strike out.
Well the young team found out the hard way that you have to win what head coach Scott Marks calls the "Free 90's War." A free 90 is when you provide your opponent a free pass to move up a base which is 90 feet from the last base. So any walks, hit by pitches or errors as example. "In game one of the double header we cannot give up 13 free 90's and expect to win. To even be in the game and have a chance after 7 walks, 2 hit by pitches allowed by our pitchers then adding 4 defensive errors is going to be too much of a hill to climb just about every time."
