Illinois Institute of Technology fell 11-10 to University of Wisconsin-Superior in seven innings on Sunday at Kino Sports Complex in Tucson, AZ despite racking up 18 hits and 10 runs.
Adam Samad (FR/Alsip, IL) put himself in scoring position with two extra-base hits for the Hawks. He doubled in the third inning, singled in the second and fifth innings, and tripled in the sixth inning.
James Tarala (FR/Crown Point, IN) took the loss for IIT. He allowed six runs in 2 1/3 innings, walked two and struck out one. Even though Kyle Gauger allowed eight runs over five innings he still recorded the victory for UW-Superior. He struck out three, walked none and surrendered 15 hits. Superior closer Brock McDermid put away the final six outs to record the save. With all the runs scored in the contest the visitor UW-Superior never relinquish the lead after scoring two runs in the first inning.
After pushing across three runs in the bottom of the second, Tech faced just a 5-3 deficit. An RBI single by Ryan Fitzpatrick (JR/Chicago, IL), a hit by pitch, and a groundout by Darwin Argumendo gave the Scarlet and Black life. When, Kyle Gauger induced an inning-ending fly out from Michael Malfeo (JR/Orland Park, IL).
Two more runs in the bottom of the third helped IIT again close its deficit to 6-5. An RBI single by Sam Pung (SO/Ludington, MI) and an RBI double by Adam Samad triggered the comeback.
A three-run fifth inning helped bring the Hawks within one run yet again. A two-run single by Austin Boos (SO/Indianapolis, IN) and an RBI single by Darwin Argumedo (JR/Cartagena, Colombia) fueled the spark. But, Kyle Gauger got Brian Colon-Rodriguez (SO/Carolina, PR) to end the inning.
After pushing across two runs in the bottom of the sixth, IIT faced just an 11-10 deficit. An RBI triple by Adam Samad and then the pinch hit RBI single by Erik Bordner (SR/San Juan Capistrano, CA) ended the scoring for the game and the day.
