Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks Baseball and University of Wisconsin-Superior volleyed the lead three times on Sunday, March 16th as the Hawks came out on top for a 5-2 win at Kino Sports Complex in Tucson, AZ. This gives Illinois Tech a 1-0 record for the second straight season as the 2013 Hawks did the same.
Andrew Gustafson (JR/Niles, IL) looked sharp on the mound for his first start of the season. University of Wisconsin-Superior managed just two hits off of the Hawks' pitcher, who allowed one earned run, walked five and struck out four during his six innings of work.
Grant Schneider was the game's losing pitcher for UW-Superior. He lasted just one-third of an inning, walked two, struck out none, and allowed four runs.
The top of the first saw IIT Hawks take an early lead, 1-0. Austin Boos (SO/Indianapolis, IN) tripled to start things off before Michael singled, scoring Austin. The home team answered in the second with two runs of their own. But then Tech managed to grab the lead for good after a strong four run sixth inning which ended on a two-run single by Bill Cronin (JR/Orland Park, IL), scoring Alex Babusci (JR/Park Ridge, IL) and Adam Samad (FR/Alsip, IL). Michael Malfeo (JR/Orland Park, IL) did his best to jumpstart the offense for IIT, reaching base three times while driving in two runners.
