Chicago, IL – The Scarlet Hawks had their first meet of the 2013-2014 season against North Central College. The men won 10 of the 11 events against their opponents from Naperville, IL. Multiple individual event winners include senior Ray Mohaimani, junior captain Billy Bafia, and sophomores Kevin Boldt and Tanner Grieve.
The team of Joseph Lakner, Bafia, Grieve, and Tristan Busch started the meet with a win in the 200 yard medley relay. Kevin Boldt began his sophomore campaign with a win in the 1000 yard freestyle. Tanner Grieve won the 200 yard freestyle with a 1:56.96. Grieve was followed by Ray Mohaimani with a win in the 200 yard individual medley.
After the break, Grieve came back with a win in the 200 yard butterfly in a 2:09.17. Lakner provided the most exciting race of day by tying with North Central's Jake Nesemeier in the 100 yard freestyle. Both men went a 52.42. Mohaimani continued the winning tradition with a 2:08.01 in the 200 yard backstroke. Boldt was next with a win in the 500 yard freestyle. In the final individual event of the day, Bafia held off a hard charging Felipe Bergh in the 200 yard breaststroke where they finished 2:23.08 and 2:24.72 respectively.
Ending the meet with a win were McGuire, Boldt, Lakner, and Mohaimani in the 200 yard freestyle relay. "I was very impressed with Connor's performances," commented first year head coach Eric Bugby. "He has been swimming well all season long. This meet shows what hard work does; every event was a best time for him. That's not easily done in a dual meet and in the middle of tough training."
"There are a lot of positives that came out of this first meet," said Bugby. "We changed our approach after the first break and saw a commitment to the second half and third 50 of each race. There are also a lot of areas for improvement and we will address them in training. I'm excited to see how we respond in our next meet against Grinnell College."
The next challenge for the Hawks is at Grinnell College (IA) on November 16 at 3:00pm.
