Hammond, IN – Illinois Tech volleyball team got back on the winning side in game one of the day against tournament host Purdue University-North Central in the CCAC Crossover Tournament. The Hawks dropped the first two sets and played on the brink of defeat to win the final three sets to finish off the Panthers (21-25, 20-25, 25-15, 25-21, 15-5).
The wealth was spread all around in this match up with 9 lady Hawks finishing attacks. Taylor Duman, the Hawk in the middle, slammed 15 kills to lead the way as well as 2.5 blocks and a career-high seven digs. Kate Kendall kept up her hitting ways with 13 kills. Roma Mirutenko rounded out the double digit finishers with 12 of her own and seven digs. Brittany Mead had 23 digs for the defense but the star of the match would have to be the setter Shea Manley. Manley put up 51 sets that turned into points out of a possible 53 from the entire team.
Game two of the day was against Olivet Nazarene University and the Tigers were victorious (17-25, 19-25, 22-25). Rebecca Wilson was the leading hitter with eight kills in the contest. Roma Mirutenko and Elizabeth Woltman both finished with five kills apiece. Taylor Duman added three kills to the total scoring. Brittany Mead and young Hawk Chelsea Badiola were the bulk of the defending as they had 18 and 10 digs respectively. Shea Manley accounted for 21 of the teams 24 assist opportunities.
The Hawks are now 9-17 on the season and tomorrows day two of the tournament will bring a double-header against Trinity Christian and Purdue University-Calumet.
