On Saturday, October 12, 2013, Illinois Tech hosted its first annual team Pentathlon and Alumni Meet.
PENTATHLON - "We scheduled the Pentathlon instead of an inter-squad meet this year in order to see what each member of the team can do in every stroke. More importantly, I wanted to see how they held up after six races: five scored swimming races and one kick race," said first year head coach Eric Bugby.
On the men's side, senior Arya Mohaimani won the first annual event with a total time of 4:46.50. Mohaimani added individual wins in the 100 backstroke and 100 individual medley. Other individual wins went to junior captain Billy Bafia in the 100 breaststroke, senior Felipe Bergh in the 100 butterfly, and senior Yoni Pruzansky in the 100 freestyle as well as the 100 freestyle kick with a board.
On the women's side, sophomore Nicole Frantz won her respective pentathlon with a total time of 6:56.48. Frantz also posted individual wins in the 100 butterfly, 100 breaststroke, and 100 individual medley. Senior team captain Abby Maze added victories in the 100 backstroke and 100 freestyle.
"At this time of the year, we haven't been racing, sprinting, or anything from the blocks," added Bugby. "But we have been working how to swim a race, strategy, legs, and ending a set faster than you start it. The results mirrored our training. We are exactly where we need to be in order to be successful at our conference meet in February."
ALUMNI MEET - "I am extremely pleased with the turnout for my first Alumni Meet here at Illinois Tech," said Bugby. "A total of nine former swimmers returned to test themselves against our current team. There were even more alum watching in the crowd, so my goal for next year is to get them in the water. I might even add 25 meter races to entice them."
Recent graduate and current assistant coach Eric Grunden proved he still has the speed and endurance that made him a three event record holder. He won the 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, and 100 individual medley handily over his alumni counterparts.
"It's a pleasure to see the support our former team members still have for their program. It's a relationships that I would like to continue to build and see flourish. After the meet, I had some time to spend with a few former members and they wanted to know the direction the team was going, the changes that were being made, and our recruiting efforts. It's refreshing to see that level of interest."
The season kick off will be held at Echo Pool in Keating Sports Center on the Illinois Tech Campus Friday, November 1st at 5:00pm against North Central College.
