Munster, IN – Illinois Tech men's soccer defeated Purdue University - Calumet 1-0 in a hard fought victory at Munster High School on Wednesday evening. The Hawks found the winner through senior Robert Rixer.
The first half was filled with action with few clear chances for either side as both teams adapted to tricky field conditions. Livewire Nordine Amlaiky proved to be a handful for the Peregrines in the defense but was unable to continue his goal scoring streak which saw him net 3 in his past 2 outings. The best chance of the half fell to the home side in bizarre circumstances when IIT goalkeeper EJ Yang's clearance met the face of Peregrines forward Papa Otoo. The ball ricocheted back past Yang but fortunately for the visitors, inches wide of the upright. Otoo appeared to be shaken from the incident but returned minutes later.
Both sides upped the ante in the second half with the visiting Hawks' providing exciting moves going forward. It was the hosts however who came closest as a scramble in the box led to a shot being fired off the IIT post. Amlaiky had a powerful shot narrowly miss before Rixer's goal gave the Hawks the advantage. Junior Nathan McMahon played a lovely deep ball from the Hawks' backline up to Rixer who blasted his shot into the corner of the net.
Minutes later, Jorge Salas-Moreno nearly doubled the advantage with a sensational free kick from 30 yards. His shot however was equally matched by Peregrines keeper Jeremy Marquez. The home side's task was made harder in the 77th when PUC's Gonzalez was given his marching orders.
It was the Scarlet Hawks' 2nd shutout of the season with EJ Yang again on hand with a solid performance in goal. With the win, the Hawks move to 5-4-3 on the season going into a tough Saturday afternoon matchup against Judson University at Stuart Field.
