Bridgeview, Ill. – The IIT men's soccer tied Roosevelt University 2-2 at Toyota Park on Wednesday afternoon. The visiting Hawks side found the net through Nathan McMahon and Rex Meier.
Coming off two straight wins, the Hawks welcomed back senior Jorge Salas to the starting lineup who was recovering from a foot injury sustained earlier in the season.
In the 25th minute, the breakthrough arrived for the visitors through an unlikely source in junior Nathan McMahon. McMahon plays center back and does not get many goal opportunities. Rex Meier's corner found its way to the back post which was clinically finished into the net by the 6'4" center back. It was McMahon's first career goal in Hawks colors but more importantly gave the visitors a 1-0 lead going into the break.
The second half began with plenty of drama as the Hawks struck within 42 seconds of the restart. A free-kick on the left flank was beautifully delivered by junior Brandon Ramirez where Rex Meier guided the ball into the net with a technically sound header. It was Meier's second goal of the campaign and gave the visitors a crucial 2-0 lead.
The 2-goal cushion was short lived however when Roosevelt's Jaime Zepeda got on the end of a cross in the 51st minute to make the scores 2-1. Seven minutes later, the game reached boiling point when a Laker player was shown a red card.
With a goal and a one man advantage, IIT had a great opportunity to close out the game. The Lakers scored the goal to even the score for good with 16 minutes remaining in the game. Off the penalty kick Leo Rodriguez put it in the net and that is the way it remained through double overtime.
It was a tough loss after having a 2 goal lead however they go into Saturday's crucial match against Robert Morris with a 3-match undefeated streak and an overall record of 3-2-3 on the season. The game begins at 3:30pm at Stuart Field against a very strong Robert Morris side who defeated the #2 nationally ranked Hannibal La-grange earlier in the season.
