Illinois Tech (1-3) came into Sunday's consolation game of the University of Chicago (0-2) Midway Classic looking for their first victory. It took an extra five minutes of searching, but they were able to pick up their first win of the year over the host school in overtime by a score of 70-68. Led by junior Rob Knapczyk and freshman Kyle Corbin, who had 18 and 16 points respectively, the Scarlet Hawks put up their best defensive effort in knocking off the Maroons.
The field goal percentage for both teams told the story of the game. Illinois Tech only shot 38.7% overall, but connected on 40% of their 3-pt shots, including 6-12 combined shooting by Knapczyk and Corbin. But the Hawks held the University of Chicago to just 31.9% from the field and a paltry 19.4% (7-36) from 3-pt range to get the victory.
The Hawks changed their starting line-up for the game and got another fine contribution from their bench. One night after having only two double digit scorers in the game, both off the bench, on Sunday the Hawks were led in rebounding by two reserves, sophomore Steeve Koloko (7 rebounds and 9 points) and senior Carlos Fernandez (7 rebounds and 6 points).
Illinois Tech will take the hardwood again Monday night against visiting Spalding University at 5:00pm. Spalding comes in at 1-0 with a victory Saturday against IU-Northwest by a score of 86-63.
