Wheaton, IL - Scarlet Hawks returned to action on Saturday, after opening their season last week. Wheaton College hosted Gill Dodds Invitational, where 14 teams toed the line.
Senior Phillip Cano was IIT's first men to cover the 8 km race, in 27:09, followed closely by Landon Vowels, 27:13. Peter Lau, and the Montague brothers, Andrew Montague and Ethan Montague, ran most of the race together, and finished in the same order, scoring 60, 63, and 70 points for Illinois Tech.
Saturday's performance was good enough for a 10th place, in a field that had two of the nation's top five teams. North Central College was ranked 1st in last week's NCAA Division III poll and Washington University (MO) was 4th on that same list.
In a close race, Washington University beat North Central by 2 points, 31 to 33. Wheaton College, another nationally ranked team, finished in a distant 3rd, scoring 106. "The boys ran better than last week and I am really confident that we will gain momentum in the next race or two. It was nice to see them working together." said head coach Calin Hantau.
College of DuPage Invitational a night race is up next and is scheduled for Friday, September 27.
