Chicago, IL - Illinois Tech Swimming & Diving head coach Eric Bugby announced on Wednesday that senior Abby Maze and junior Billy Bafia have been voted team captains for the 2013-2014 season.
"Both captains will do a great job of setting a high standard for their teammates and Illinois Tech. They care about this team and its future," said Bugby.
Billy Bafia was an A-finalist in the 100 and 200 breaststroke last year at the 2013 Liberal Arts Conference championship meet. He was also a member of the team's 200 freestyle relay that placed second.
When asked how it felt to be named by his teammates as one of the new leaders Bafia explained, "Swimming has always been an important part of my life and with the old captain of the team graduating, I knew it was time for me to step up and keep the team moving in a forward and positive direction."
Abby Maze was an A-finalist in the 200 freestyle at the 2013 Liberal Arts Conference championship meet. She was also a B-finalist in the 100 and 500 freestyle as well as a member of the team's 200 freestyle relay, 400 freestyle relay, 200 medley relay, and 400 medley relay.
"I wanted to be captain so that I can motivate the team to work harder and be better. Also to be a role model, not only in swimming, but as a person too," said Maze after asked about the honor. Maze's father is also an alumnus of Illinois Tech.
"Billy and Abby will do an excellent job leading this team," said Bugby. "They already have team activities and community service events planned. It's going to be a fun and rewarding year with them."
The Scarlet Hawks will open the 2013-2014 season with its first annual Hawk Heptathlon and Alumni Meet on Saturday, October 12 at 11:00am in Ecko Pool of Keating Sports Center.
