Chicago, IL - Illinois Tech came out swinging today against the Lakers of Roosevelt University. The Hawks offense was missing one key ingredient starting catcher Michael Malfeo who had been the team's leading hitter thus far is out due to an injury. You could not tell with the 12 runs scored off of 13 hits. The start of the day was sophomore center fielder Ryan Fitzpatrick who went 3-for-6 with 2 runs scored and 1 run batted in. Fitzpatrick came up to the plate with 2 outs in the bottom of the ninth and ripped a base hit past a diving first baseman for the walk off win.
The Hawks used most of the pitching staff as they passed the ball to get the job done. As Matthew Bishop went 7.0 innings allowing 6 runs (4 earned) with 4 strike outs and 3 walks. Then came Jesus Sanchez for the first two out in the eighth inning and fellow senior John Rotella finished the inning. Freshmen Conner Wiebell came in for the ninth and pitched around 2 walks and 1 run. The offence had had enough and gifted Wiebell with the win as they call that "snaking a win" by a pitcher.
The team moves to 3-8 (2-2 CCAC) and the next contest is tomorrow's double header at Roosevelt Saturday March 30th at 1:00 pm.
