Chicago, IL - Illinois Tech men's soccer coach Marc Colwell has announced the 2013 recruiting class for the Scarlet Hawks that will compete in the 2013-2014 year. The incoming class includes six freshmen and two 2013 spring semester transfer enrollees.
"We have a strong core of players returning this fall and I'm excited about the infusion of talent from the incoming players," said Colwell. "I expect several of the newcomers to step in and compete for playing time right away."
Illinois Tech returns seven starters from last season when they finished 8-9-2 including a 5-4-2 conference record. With the addition of the newcomers and the new turf field renovation, it is an exciting time for Scarlet Hawk soccer. Updates and pictures for the field construction can be found here.
The eight student-athletes include four Illinois residents, two Indiana natives, and one newcomer from each Texas and Mexico respectively.
Miguel Acosta, Jr., M, Transfer from Western Illinois University
Acosta is a junior transfer from Western Illinois played in 15 games with 3 starts in 2012 for WIU. Previous to that he played two years at Joliet West High School in Joliet, IL and started in every match for the team. He competed with the Chicago Fire and Chicago Magic academy teams where in 2005-06 he was part of the Olympic Development Program national champions. As well as being named to the ODP all-region team 2005-07, selected to play and train with the U15 national team, and played in one match at DePaul in 2011. His support from home is from his parents Miguel and Merta Acosta.
Oscar Cazalez, Fr., M
Cazalez is an international player by way of Morelos, Mexico. Cazalez most recently played for the Chicago Bulls College Prep High School where he was awarded with All-Conference and Team Most Valuable Player honors. His intended academic major while at Illinois Tech is Business Management and his parents are Mauro Cazalez and Victoria Hidalgo.
Jamal Douglas, Fr., D, Inter FC
Douglas attended Whitney Young High School in Chicago, IL where he received All-Conference in Premier Division as well as Indiana High School Soccer Coaches Association (IHSSCA) Honorable Mention Team. He played club soccer for Matt Prunckle with the International Football Club. Academic concentration will be in Mechanical Engineering and his parents are Karen Bourne-Douglas and Norbert Douglas.
Alex Dunfee, Fr., M, Dynamo FC 95 Katner
Dunfee is a great addition from Plainfield High School while he is a native of Camby, IN. He is a three year varsity player at the high school level and plays his club soccer for John Griffin at Dynamo FC. Civil Engineering is his academic choice while at IIT and his parents are Ryan and Stephanie Dunfee.
Thomas Gasienica, Fr., M/F, Raiders FC
Gasienica played at Lemont High School in Lemont, IL for Rick Prangen, where he was selected to the 2012 All-Conference and All-Area teams. Gasienica led the team to the 2012 IHSA Regional title with 17 goals (46 career goals in 75 matches). His club days were spent with Raiders FC. He was a member of the National Honor Society and his academic focus at IIT will be in Mechanical Engineering. His parents are Janusz and Mary Gasienica.
Robert Gawrylo, Fr., D/M, Wisla
Gawrylo is a local player from Chicago that attended Maine South High School. He was honored as a 2013-2014 Illinois State Scholar. Gawrylo will also be studying Mechanical Engineering at IIT and his parents are Agata and John Gawrylo.
Samuel Smith, So., F, Transfer from Indiana University
Smith a native of Munster, IN transfers in from Indiana University. He played his high school soccer at Munster High School for Jim Prasopoulos. He was honored as an Academic All-Conference and a First Team All-Conference player at Munster as well as part of the National Honor Society. He will be studying Business Administration at IIT. Smith has all four years of eligibility remaining and his parents are Timothy and Patricia Smith.
Alex Thompson, Fr., D, Crossfire
Thompson comes to Illinois Tech from Round Rock, TX where he attended Cedar Ridge High School and played for Coach Jorge Garcia. Thompson was named a First Team All-District player. He also played club soccer for Brad Matheny at Crossfire. A member of the National Honor Society, Thompson will be studying Computer Engineering at IIT and his parents are Ian and Babette Thompson.
