The Scarlet Hawks dropped game two of a thrilling season-opening doubleheader against William Penn University at the Tucson Invitational on Sunday, March 4. The Hawks squad performed well in their effort, led by the solid pitching of freshman Matthew Bishop, but ultimately came up short with a final score of 3-4.
Bishop gave up three earned runs in six innings on 7 hits, 1 walk, 4 hit batsmen and 3 strikeouts. Senior John Rotella entered the game on relief in the bottom of the seventh inning, giving up 1 earned run on 3 hits.
Senior Jon Celestino again led the Hawks offense, going 2-for-4, with a single, a homerun and 2 RBI. Jon's homerun marks the first of the season for the Scarlet Hawks. Sophomore Mike Malfeo contributed with a 2-for-4 showing, including an RBI single and triple, while Ryan Fitzpatrick went 1-for-4 with a triple and run scored.
Tied at 3-3 entering the seventh inning, William Penn's offense overpowered the Hawks, with the winning run scored on a single. Despite the close loss, the Hawks were encouraged with their opening day performance and enter the 2013 season on an optimistic note.
