Ind. - The IIT women ended their conference games with a 6-1 win over Calumet
College of St. Joseph on Saturday afternoon.
Scarlet Hawks started the game strong but struggled through the first half,
adjusting to the defense's offside trap. A rough small playing surface and
another cool day were also contributing factors in the game. Freshman Grace Durbin led the way for the team
scoring the first goal from a pass from Kay Durbin and then taking the ball
down the field, through defenders, and finally past the keeper. The Hawks were
also able to capitalize on Emily Kunkel's corner kick when Stephanie Salem put
the ball into the net on the far post. After 45 minutes of play, the game was 2-0.
Carly Stanford got her first goal of the season, assisted by Erica Delgado,
with a nice chip over the Calumet keeper from
outside the 18 yard box. From here, Mary McCabe took over, becoming only the third
player in programs history to record a hat trick. Her first goal came from a
nice over the top ball by Sara Wilde which McCabe ran onto and touched it past
the keeper. Her second goal came the same way. Her third goal came with just
minutes to go in the game. Meagan Sarratt took the ball to the goal line and
crossed it back for McCabe to head into the back on the net. Calumet's
goal came from a freekick off of a handball in IIT's defensive end.
had a great season and our conference play as been fantastic," stated Coach
Peacock. "This is the best we have ever
done in the conference. To finish 5th in the CCAC, narrowly missing
out on hosting the play-off, with a 5-4-0 record, is unbelievable. To finish above Olivet Nazarene and JudsonUniversity
shows how much we have improved. This is the best season in the programs
history and the girls should be really proud of what they have achieved."
Scarlet Hawks finish their regular season with a 5-4 conference record, 9-8-1
overall. They are scheduled to play St. Xavier
University at 12noon, Saturday,
November 1st, in the CCAC Quarter final Play-off.
