SOMERS, WI - The IIT men's cross country team competed this past weekend at the Midwest Collegiate Invitational hosted by UW-Parkside on Saturday (Sept.10) in Somers, Wisconsin.
UW-Parkside took the team title with 60 points while IIT finished the race in fifth place with 134 points. This positioned the Scarlet Hawks ahead of Div I UW-Green bay and all other NAIA competing teams.
A total of 140 runners finished the race with Jake Reilly of UW-Milwaukee running a winning time of 25:55, followed by Evan Lewandowski of UW-Parkside in second with 25:59, Logan Barret of St. Joesph's College in third with26:18, Bobby Glotfelty of UWM in fourth with 26:48 and Tom Hedman of UWP taking fifth in 27:04.
Top five finishers for IIT include Zach Gates (Jr • Columbus/IN), Kenny Murphy (Jr • Anchorage/AK), Wes Villalobos (Sr • Salem/IL), Andrew Montague (Fr •Downers Grove/IL) and Phil Theisen(Sr •Carleton/MI. Gates finished 16th in 27:34, Murphy 25th in 28:10, Villalobos 27th in 28:20, Montague 31st in 28:27 and Theisen 35th in 28:44.
"The times are not indicative of how well we ran today. I expect we will continue to get faster as the season progresses. Today the course just ran slow, so you compare your places, and your team place in comparison to you competition. Beating a Div I program and all the other NAIA teams competing speaks volumes about where we are as a program right now"Stated coach Kopinski.
