Fort Wayne, IN – The Illinois Tech women's soccer team opened its road slate with a tussle with rival Indiana Tech. Illinois Tech (0-2) held a decisive edge in statistical categories; 12-6 in shots of goal and 5 corners to 1 for Indiana Tech (1-1). Tech commanded the most important stat line with a 2-1 decision on the scoreboard.
Junior goalkeeper Amy Arnhart made four saves all in the second half for the Scarlet Hawks.
The Scarlet Hawks dominated possession in the first half, but could only tally a single goal to go in 1-0 at the half-time whistle. Freshman midfielder Veronica Torres served in a perfect cross to a driving Jaimie Ward for the one-time header into the back of the net in the 35th minute.
The Hawks held the host Warriors to only 3 shots in the first half with none on frame.
The Warriors came out with a renewed passion in the second half and were rewarded with a Jess Stanton goal in the 51st minute. The score would remain knotted at 1-1 until late in the contest.
With just over four minutes left in the game, Manuela Cabal got on the end of a cross for a Warrior goal and a 2-1 lead. The lead would hold up as the Scarlet Hawks could not find the equalizer as time expired.
Indiana Tech goalkeeper Jordan Roell played a key role with 11 saves on the day.
"I thought our back four was very solid in the first half," said Illinois Tech head coach Marc Colwell. "We connected well in the first half and controlled the tempo. Indiana Tech added some pressure at the start of the 2nd half and we let them take us out of our way of playing. It's a disappointing result but something that the girls can build on."
The Scarlet Hawks return to action on Saturday against Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Michigan at 2:30 p.m. (CST). The Tech women stay on the road for a game at Davenport University on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. (CST) in Grand Rapids.
