CHICAGO, IL - The Scarlet Hawks Baseball Team concluded the
year on a great note with several of the student-athletes receiving all conference
awards. The following athletes made the
CCAC All-Academic Team (involves a 3.25 GPA on a 4.0 scale and achievement of
at least junior status): Matthew Bednarz (Carol Stream, IL), Miguel Gallegos
(Vernon Park, IL), Kyle Guglielmo (Castroville, CA), Andrew Kungis (Palos Heights,
IL), Branden Schombert (Lockridge, IA), and Jesse Stepniewski (Skokie,
IL). Furthermore the Hawks baseball team
had three members of the NAIA Scholar Athlete team (a minimum of a 3.5 GPA on a
4.0 scale). The athletes that made this
team were Miguel Gallegos, Matthew Bednarz, and Jesse Stepniewski.
In addition to the numerous academic awards achieved by the
2010 team there were are a few very significant athletic awards received by
member of the team. Junior Nick Wise (Mendota, IL)
won the Gold Glove centerfielder award of the CCAC as he did not make an error
all year to go along with 66 putouts. Senior
Branden Schombert also won Gold Glove Honors for pitching this year he also had
a perfect fielding percentage. On the
mound Schombert also did not any baserunner to steal a base. Schombert also was the winner of the Ed
Glancy Award this year. The Ed Glancy
Award is annually presented to a male and female senior student-athlete who
best exemplifies the work ethic, dedication, and high standards of an Illinois
Tech graduate. This standard of
commitment was set forth by Ed Glancy, who served IIT faithfully for 35
years. Jesse Stepniewski was also
declared an honorable mention winner on the CCAC level.
Jon Celestino (London,
CA) won the best newcomer award
for the 2010 year as he finished with a .264 batting average and hitting 3 homeruns in
the time that he saw at first base and as a designated hitter. Senior James Dodgen (Flagstaff, AZ)
was declared CCAC Pitcher of the year.
Dodgen had a remarkable year as he led the conference in ERA with a
2.48. Dodgen threw 61.2 innings this
year in which he struck out an impressive 63 hitters while only walking 9. Dodgen only gave up 13 extra base hits all
year. Dodgen was also declared the team
MVP for the 2010 Campaign. Congrats to
all of the award winners of the Scarlet Hawk baseball team and to the Seniors
that have graduated this year.
