The weekend prior to spring break, the Scarlet Hawks
swimming and diving team travelled to St.
Peters, Missouri to
compete in the NAIA National Swimming and Diving championship. Overall, the
men's team placed 7th out of 17 teams, and the women's team took 11th
out of 21. The team came home with 1 National Champion, 7 All American swims (finishing
top 3 in an event), and 6 new school records.
The meet started on Wednesday afternoon with men's 3 meter
and women's 1 meter diving. Freshman diver, Ian McNair, took 3rd on
the 3 meter board, with a final score of 254.70. Thursday, McNair had an
impressive performance, moving up from a 3rd place standing in the
preliminary rounds of diving, to take 1st on the 1 meter board,
nabbing his first National Championship. McNair's final score was 259.20.
McNair is the third diver at IIT under head coach Rob Bond, and diving coach
Ryan Nelson, to have won a National Championship title.
At the other end of the pool, the swimmers were also hard at
work. The women's 200 yard medley relay of sophomores Andrea Zuniga, Julia
Duarte, Morgan Curran and Melanie Koto took 13th with an overall
time of 1:55.66 and the men's relay of freshman Matthew Rosenfeld and Eric
Grunden, senior Joe Taylor, and sophomore Max Ramminger took 7th
with a final time of 1:33.52. In the 200 yard individual medley, Curran placed
10th overall, with a final time of 2.11.97, and Grunden took 15th
for the men's team with a 1:59.52. In the men's 50 yard freestyle, Ramminger had
to really race, and out touching Concordia's Eric Anderssen for 2nd by .04
seconds, finishing in a time of 20.47, a new team record. The women's 800 yard
freestyle relay of freshman Victoria Masney, Zuniga, Curran and Koto took 10th,
with a final time of 7:59.66, and the men's team of Grunden, senior Jay Park,
junior Joe Muchna, and freshman Michael Keane swam to a 9th place
finish with a time of 7:08.48.
Friday started day 2 of the swimming, starting off with the
200 yard freestyle relay. The women's relay of Koto, Zuniga, Curran and Masney
finished 11th with a time of 1:42.37, and the men's team, consisting
of Ramminger, junior Mark Callan, Grunden and Taylor took 5th with a
time of 1:23.99. Curran took 4th in the 400 yard individual medley,
with a final time of 4:39.71, and Muchna took 15th for the men's
team, finishing with a final time of 4:17.26. In the 100 yard butterfly, Masney
took 3rd, finishing with a school record time of 57.10. Taylor also took 3rd
for the men's team, finishing in a team record time of 48.92, and sophomore
Keiji Halloway took 16th for the team with a final time of 52.32. In
the 200 yard freestyle, Koto took 8th with a time of 1:58.16, and
Grunden took 8th for the men's team in the 100 yard breaststroke,
with a time of 59.09, and Ramminger took 15th in the event with a
time of 59.48. Finishing up the day, the women's 400 yard medley relay of
Zuniga, Curran, Masney and Koto took 9th with a time of 4:03.99, and
the men's team of Rosenfeld, Grunden, Taylor and Ramminger took 8th
with a time of 3:30.61.
On the third and final day of the meet, Muchna took 20th
the mile for the men's team with a time of 17:10.06. In the 200 yard
backstroke, Rosenfeld took 18th with a time of 1:59.89. Masney took
2nd in the 100 yard freestyle, setting a new team record with a time
of 51.54, and Koto placed 13th with a time of 54.30. Ramminger took
3rd in the event, also with a team record breaking time of 45.24. In
the 200 yard breaststroke, Curran took 13th, finishing with a time
of 2:28.92, and in the men's 200 yard butterfly, Halloway took 12th
with a time of 1:56.68, and Muchna took 13th with a time of 1:57.53.
The last event of the meet was the 400 yard freestyle relay, in which the
women's team of Koto, Zuniga, Curran and Masney were out touched by Lindenwood,
taking 11th by. 04 seconds, and finished with a time of 3:38.05. The
men's team of Grunden, freshman John Lyman, Taylor and Ramminger took 7th
with a final time of 3:08.55.
